THE TRUTH IS: You don’t need a man to make a difference in this world. But it can certainly be beneficial (and oh so enjoyable!) to have a loving husband who spiritually covers, loves, and encourages you.

As you trust that God will give you the marital desires of your heart, consider these nuggets of wisdom from bestselling author Sheri Rose Shepherd. They’ll help you know when (and when not!) to say “I do.”

Consider looking at the way a man loves his mother, because it is the way he will eventually love his wife.

Consider giving the relationship enough time before you make a solid decision. Why? Because, in the beginning, you’re both still putting your “best foot forward.”

Consider paying attention to the way he reacts when there is stress or conflict. Proverbs 25:28 teaches that “a person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out” (The Message). In essence, they are always vulnerable to invasion and attack.

Consider meeting his friends. “Do not be misled. Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33, New International Version).

Consider looking at what he reads and watches on television. They will be a reflection of his moral fiber.

Consider keeping the relationship physically pure. This will help you think clearly. And, it is imperative that a man respects your boundaries (without challenging them).

Consider asking him to pray for you often. You will need a husband who has a genuine relationship with God, and willingly covers you in prayer.

Consider seeking advice from people with experience and wisdom. “In the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14, Amplified Bible).

Consider surrendering to God’s perfect will. Remember, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives” (Psalm 37:23, New Living Translation). c
